Engineering Cleavage Today I got to try on the under kimono (to make sure it fit right) and unfortunately reached two conclusions: 1) the bra I like is just not comfortable enough to wear for 3 days and 2) I have great cleavage but not in the right place.
So I got friendly with foam rubber and some scissors today to engineer myself better cleavage. I think this will work, assuming I remember where all the pieces of foam go to make it look right... | | 1:17 am |
Yet another color This turned out pretty well. I declare it good enough. And it's damned hard to take photos of the back of your head. ( The color it's going to be ) | | Saturday, May 10th, 2008 | | 9:29 pm |
Matsumoto revisited Wow, I forgot how good LJ was for getting unsolicited advice when I'm just posting my musings. Okay, a few responses.
Why am I playing this character? Because I needed a Bleach character to match my friends, and her personality is fun. I'm not willing to play a lot of female anime characters because I mostly want to hit them. Matsumoto is a personality I can handle much better.
Aren't her breasts insane? Uh, yeah, she's an anime character. But some of what y'all brought up are fan drawings, not the actual series illustrations. So take some of it with a grain of salt.
Why do I want breasts like hers? I don't. I like my breasts. I am simply attempting to get something that will work for the costume, hence the use of push up bras. (Which have...other uses...too.)
Why don't you try X? Because I already know what I'm doing: I'm going to wear one of the bras I have. I'm just going to wait and see which looks better. (Oh, Phil: I did try them both on, but a) two underwires at once is going to kill me and b) they don't have compatible necklines. But thanks for the suggestion.)
What about the hair? Actually, this is more what I could have used advice on, but I ultimately went to the beauty supply store and consulted with a lady there. My hair (after 4 bottles of dye) is a lovely coppery color, about the shade of a new shiny penny. This will work perfectly well for her, as her shade is somewhere between blonde and orange, depending on the shot you have.
What about photos? We'll see if the costumes come out. Or are even finished...
Are you annoyed at all these suggestions? No, just highly, highly amused. | | Friday, May 9th, 2008 | | 6:06 pm |
Of pushup bras and hair dye So, Anime Central is in a week and I'm cosplaying with some of my friends. Since they were going as Rukia and Renji from Bleach, I decided I might as well go as a Bleach character. I am, in fact, going as Matsumoto.
There are two problems with this. First, her hair. Second, her breasts. Her hair is, well, kind of orange. Somewhere between blonde and redheaded, but more orange. I have not yet managed to get this shade - I've got a light red now, but it's not really her color. I have to decide whether I'm going to try to make it blonder (and risk ending up some random possibly worse color) or go with it as it is. I'm not sure what to do, but I better do it soon as we leave on Wednesday.
Second, Matsumoto has anime breasts: they are large and squashed together into an impressive amount of cleavage. Now there is really no earthly way for me to end up quite like her, because she's probably a DD and I'm a B. (Furthermore, I like breathing, and I'll be wearing this for about 3 days.) However, I can get closer to it by the clever use of a pushup bra. The problem is, I can't decide which of the two I've bought is better. One of them gives more cleavage; the other gives bigger all-around cup size. I'll probably take them both and see which looks better under the kimono (which, naturally, you aren't silly enough to think are actually done, right?)
It's a little weird, though, to be amassing quite such a collection of push-up bras. However, if there are ever any ladies in need of them, I recommend J.C. Penney's. Especially if you're looking for something weird, like a 40B. | | Thursday, May 1st, 2008 | | 4:51 pm |
Announcing... Juliana Leigh Roper! Yes, she has a name! | | 11:40 am |
Congrats to the Ropers A second baby girl Roper has arrived on the scene! Congrats to the Ropers! | | Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 | | 4:47 pm |
Happy Birthday I'm not usually good about these things, but I noticed it's kitanzi's birthday, and wishing her a happy birthday sounds way better than concentrating on more loan crap. (Trust me, you don't want to know.) So... Happy Birthday! Yay! | | Thursday, April 17th, 2008 | | 2:10 pm |
Fascinating survey I got this from tigerbright, and I found the survey so interesting that I'm passing it on to all of my classes. I figured I'd pass it on to my friends as well. My name is Adam Sanford. I am a graduate student at the University of California, Riverside, and I am conducting a study of social attitudes in America towards the law and the legal system. I am looking for participants who are over the age of 18 and have access to the Internet, who are willing to take a short online survey about certain laws and legal issues. This survey will only ask your opinion about laws and legal issues. You will not be asked about personal experiences with the law or the legal system. Your privacy will be protected at all times and no personally identifying information, including IP addresses, will be collected. The informed consent statement is available here. If, after reading the informed consent statement, you would like to participate, please go to this page. [I would note that you can get there directly from the consent page also - ELN.]
I would also appreciate it if you could forward this posting on to others who may be interested in taking this survey. Thank you for your time and consideration.Just a note - please note that this survey is only for US citizens over 18. The author has asked me to let people know that he hopes to conduct a global study when he receives funding, but for now he has to restrict his consideration to US citizens. | | Friday, April 11th, 2008 | | 12:04 pm |
2008 Pegasus Brainstorming Poll Hello everyone! It's that time of year again - time to brainstorm for the Pegasus poll! Because our committee has had a lot of Real Life lately, we're extending the poll's deadline to make up for it. You can brainstorm ideas for the Pegasus awards through Sunday April 20th; we'll be closing at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Monday April 21st. So once it's Monday the 21st in California, it's too late. Please come and generate suggestions - the more suggestions we get in brainstorming, the better nominations we tend to get. You can submit as many brainstorming polls as you like! The link is here: 2008 Brainstorming PollOur floating categories, just to remind people, are Comedy and Tragedy. Thanks for your ideas! We appreciate them! Erica Neely Pegasus Evangelista | | Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 | | 7:46 pm |
I just gotta say... Bill and Gretchen Roper are two of the sweetest, kindest people I know, and I adore them.
(I don't plan to explain what sparked this comment but, honestly, it's hard to argue with even if you don't know the specifics. *grin*) | | Saturday, March 29th, 2008 | | 11:51 am |
FYI I'm not planning to respond to any more comments on the torture entry. It was interesting to see people's views, but I've had enough; I have other things I should be doing! | | Friday, March 28th, 2008 | | 5:52 pm |
Blog Against Torture Apparently today is blog against torture day. I'm not really sure why, but I don't understand half of the fads that go through LJ, so that's nothing new.
I do not believe in very many moral absolutes. I'm not a utilitarian - I do think that some things are morally wrong, even if they would generate a great amount of satisfaction for others. (Persecuting a minority, say.) But I'm less inclined to see things in black and white than many. I do believe it is morally wrong to torture someone solely for your own amusement or enjoyment. (Note: the way I have phrased it rules out S/M since that is done also for the pleasure of the person being tortured.)
The more ethically interesting question, however, comes about when you are torturing someone for some particular gain (generally a gain to a large number of people). I believe that torture is not the most reliable source of information, as there reaches a point when people will tell you anything you want to hear if they think it will make you stop. As such, much of the time, it's not a particularly good route to go. I am not willing to say that torture is never morally justifiable, however.
I would like to think that there will always be a way out of a situation that does not require these means. But I'm not willing to make that kind of absolute statement - there are many more situations than I can foresee. I believe the problem of dirty hands is a serious moral issue and that, indeed, there are times when all choices cause harm. I tend to side with Camus in thinking that, in such situations, you do what one must to minimize the harm done - but you also must pay the price for having caused that harm.
So my position? I think that there may be cases where it is morally necessary to inflict harm on another. But you better be damned sure that there's no better way, and you better be willing to take the consequences of having inflicted that harm.
And now I will see if any of my friends still speak to me after this. | | Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 | | 1:49 pm |
And this helps me how? I requested an examination copy of Ethical Issues in Professional Life, by Joan C. Callahan, from OUP. Instead, I got Principles of Finance with Excel, by Simon Benninga. What the hell am I going to do with this? I'm a philosopher. We don't do finance. I thought OUP might give me a return label (it's gotta be an expensive book, so I don't really want to trash it), but they said to donate to my library or send it back to them on my own dime. How nice.
So now I have a very heavy finance textbook and nothing to do with it. And still no ethics book. Hmmphf. | | Monday, March 24th, 2008 | | 9:36 pm |
A few things 1. If you're the person who left a message on my machine on, hmm, either Friday the 14th or the 21st thanking me for help with a songbook (?) and asking for more help, could you email me? I haven't a clue who it was - my machine cut that part off, I think.
2. Thanks for all the good thoughts on my grandmother's death; I really appreciated them. I may post more on this topic at some point, but not now because...
3. I just got back from spring break. I haven't had really reliable email/LJ since the 13th. So if you posted something you'd like me to know about, please let me know. (Unless you're Roper, because I had to keep up with my Katie Beth fix, so I did keep up with your LJ. *grin* Hey, I have priorities!)
4. I've begun the process of house hunting. As in, looking into buying a house in Ada. Be afraid, be very afraid.
5. I don't remember what 5 was going to be, because I have no brain. | | Thursday, March 13th, 2008 | | 11:20 am |
Yay! I can move my head again! It still hurts a little, but much more like a standard crick in my neck. This is good, since I have about a zillion things to do today. | | 11:14 am |
Name that song author Does anyone have any idea who wrote the following? A friend wants to perform it and give credit, but she can't do that without knowing who wrote it. ( Loot ) | | Wednesday, March 12th, 2008 | | 10:51 am |
Ow I don't know what I did to make my shoulder and neck so unhappy, but I sort of miss being able to move them without sharp shooting pains. It's hard to do much of anything without moving your head at all in any direction.
Ow ow ow. | | Monday, March 10th, 2008 | | 5:46 pm |
Consonance 2009 I haven't actually seen an online announcement, but since my sister emailed me to say that her friends at Consonance heard the announcement there, it's clearly no longer a secret.
I am very honored to have been invited to be Toastmistress for Consonance next year. I had a lot of fun last year and am very much looking forward to being there. (I've also already cleared my absence with the Dean of the College of A&S and the Chair of my new department, so they realize that I will have to miss Friday and Monday's classes surrounding the con.)
Next year in California! Yay! | | Friday, March 7th, 2008 | | 9:17 pm |

Hmmphf I was going to show people a picture of my new hair color, but I'm locked out of my Flickr account for some unknown reason. I guess it will have to wait. |
