Virtual Worldcon
I hereby declare the Virtual Worldcon open for business...or partying, or filking, or whatever.

I know I can't be the only person who wasn't able to go to Worldcon this year, so I hope lots of you will join in Virtual Worldcon! Feel free to bring munchies to share - we have both kosher and non-kosher tables, so everyone should be able to eat something.

Conversation and filking welcome; unsurprisingly, the rooms here tend to be chaos. (Although themed filk rooms (er, threads) are welcome...) And the best thing is: it doesn't matter if several people have followers - they can all sing them! At once! *maniacal laugh*

Er, sorry, I got carried away there for a minute.

Panel ideas are always welcome - at the moment we're running one called Design the Ultimate Worldcon. But feel free to start others on topics that interest you. (After all, we don't have to worry too much about space issues.)

Anyway, I've got brownies and a variety of salty munchies (pretzels, potato chips, tortilla chips) to snack on; excuse me for a sec while I duck into a filkroom or two...

Theme Filk: They Really Should Have Known Better

Okay, given the debacle with filkers and L.A. con programming, I'd like a theme filk on people who should have known better. (i.e., "Do something stupid and we write a song about you.") Contributions (and any stories that go with them) gratefully accepted.

Hrm. Give me a few minutes. *shuffles through filkbook looking for Disclave songs...*

*sings*

IDIOT! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!

Words: Dave Weingart, copyright 1997
Music: S.S. Titanic

Oh the held an SF con in New Carrolton, MD
And they had some folks who were into B&D
And some New York City cop thought that he would be the top
It was wet when that sprinkler came down

CHORUS: It was wet, it was wet
It was wet when the sprinkler came down (Disclave '97!)
(From) two drunken fen who were into S&M
It was wet when the sprinkler came down

Oh his partner was tied up when they thought of something dumb
That they didn't have an anchor point to hang the bottom from
Who'd'a thunk they'd have the call to use the sprinkler on the wall
It was wet when that sprinkler came down

CHORUS

And then so securly tied she was hoisted in the air
And it looked as though they didn't have a care
Until a lesson learned at length on a thing called tensile strength
It was wet when that sprinkler came down

CHORUS

With the water pouring forth the alarms were set to blaring
Over which you heard the sound of fandom swearing
For it woke us from deep REM just at 5:15 AM
It was wet when that sprinkler came down

CHORUS

Just as fast as you can see water washed out 303
Then it soaked and shut the elevators down
For they tend to go to sleep when the water's six feet deep
It was wet when that sprinkler came down

CHORUS

So when you find yourself in town and you feel like hanging 'round
Just remember Disclave '97's fate
Don't be tempted by the joys, fire sprinklers ain't sex toys
Don't be wet when that sprinkler comes down

CHORUS

Con Suite Chatter

One of the things I love about con suites is getting into conversations with random people.

My question for today is: Are any of you going to Japan for Worldcon next year? (And, as a subquestion, are there any other Yoshitaka Amano fans out there?)

Not I, said Gus the Goose. Although I'm pretty sure I'm going in 2008. Absolutely if it's in Chicago or Columbus, likely if it's Denver.

No chance, unfortunately; I'm still too wrapped up in straightening out finances and the like to even consider flying to Japan next year.

However, to answer the subquestion, I'm definitely an Amano fan. :)

Not going to Japan; trying hard to ensure I can get to FKO (and OVFF, if humanly possible.

Not Japan. Not that I'm very likely to be in St. Louis either, but from curiosity, do NASFiCs usually have a major filk component?

Not Japan, no, unless I win the lottery. It's almost certain that I'll go to Worldcon in 2008, since Columbus and Chicago are both driving distance, and my sister lives in Denver.

Next year, It's likely that I'll go to the Heinlein Centennial. (Me? Like Heinlein? Whatever gave you that idea?)

Definitely not Japan even though I have a legitmate deductive reason as a Japanese publisher recently picked up the Blood Books. Oh well, illegimate reasons are usually more fun. *g*

Going to Worldcon in Japan would cost so ridiculously much that about the only way I'd think of going would be if someone I didn't like (so I wanted to waste their money) was paying for it. I'd feel guilty wasting a friend's money that way.

There's a good chance I'll go to the NASFiC, unless I follow through with enough of the vague ideas for other vacations that I don't have the time off. I will expect to go to the Worldcon unless Denver steals it, which would mean having to take a much longer trip (I will never fly to an SF con that I can drive to in two days -- being limited to what I can take on a plane sucks too much).

Panel: Design the Ultimate Worldcon
[info]catalana
2006-08-23 09:02 pm UTC (link)
You're putting together a Worldcon that has no worries about budget, space, or time. Nor do you have to worry about details like "Is one of the people we want to have as a guest dead?" (That said, you're still a Worldcon and need to stick to recognizable slates of guests - you can't just make everyone a guest!) But you can pick your author, artist, and fan guests with utter disregard for actual possibility, and you are fairly unconstrained as to what events you're allowed to hold.

So, what's your Ultimate Worldcon? Who are your guests? What kinds of programming or special events do you hold? Where is it going to be?

*sets out still-warm chocolate Bundt cake with molten chocolate center and powdered sugar topping*

*pulls out guitar, tunes, plays*

Eli, the barrowboy, you're the old town
Sells coal and marigolds and he cries out all down the day
Below the tamarac she is crying
"Corn cobs and candlewax for the buying," all down the day

"Would I could afford to buy my love a fine robe
Made of gold and silk arabian thread
She is dead and gone and lying in a pine grove
And I must push my barrow all the day
And I must push my barrow all the day"

Eli, the barrowboy, when they found him
Dressed all in corduroy, he had drowned in the river down the way
They laid his body down in a churchyard
But still when the moon is out, with his pushcart, he calls down the day

"Would I could afford to buy my love a fine gown
Made of gold and silk arabian thread
But I am dead and gone and lying in a church ground
But still I push my barrow all the day
Still I push my barrow all the day"

(Eli, the Barrowboy, words and music copyright Colin Meloy (the Decemberists))

"There. Some nice found filk to start with."

On this vein, I'd have to nominate "The Mariner's Revenge Song", also by Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, as more found filk. It's hard to beat the tale of a lifelong quest for revenge that ends with the wronged party finding his target after both their ships have been swallowed by a giant whale.

[info]tnatj pops into the filk consuite with half-gallon tubs of ice-cream from last weekend's Fen & Filk. Lemon Chiffon, Black Cherry, Praline Pecan, Blue Moon, and lots of Vanilla with various toppings, including peanuts, fudge and caramel. He'll order some ice creams with chocolate bits if anyone raises their hands. The regular consuite doesn't have any of this.

There's more in the minivan. It'll be on the way as soon as I have a chance ... anyone want to give me a hand with the whole watermelons and muskmelons?

If you like, but I just brought good vanilla ice cream with fresh blackberries I picked last night in our garden. I will join the circle as soon as I finish whipping the cream and putting out the sliced almonds. Enjoy!

I'll start out with something I scribbed a few years ago. Imagine something jazzy a capella to the tune of something almost but not quite entirely unlike "Java Jive":

Adulteration station, when the coffee can't wait.
Adulteration station, when teh taste isn't great.
It's sour and burnt and just isn't right,
but rather than make it myself I will fight
through traffic and the line and then up pops the lid
for some sugar and cream in a desperate bid
to hide the true flavor. It's just coffee greed
and it just serves to enforce still more need
for the junk.

He's also got a job lot of second hand video tapes and a cardboard box of books, he's trying to get rid of. And some golf flags. As a Con special, his offer is "Any 2 items for the Price of 3!!!"

If you ask nicely, he'll even nip out to stock up on pork pies (Ah, Brian, we hardly knew you !!)
